Last month, Quirky.com (a “social product developer”) and GE organized a contest where users pitched ideas for mundane objects that can be improved by adding software into it. The eventual winner is Milkmaid, a “smart milk jug” that tells home owners whether their milk is going to spoil and when to buy some more. Milkmaid pays homage to the thick bottles we used to store milk in. The vessel can hold up to a quart of milk and it can tell when it turns sour through a set of pH and temperature sensors located in the device's base called SmartBase.
