Neutrinos could deliver millisecond advantage to cyborg Gordon Gekkos

Neutrinos could deliver millisecond advantage to cyborg Gordon Gekkos

In a world where stocks are traded based on price changes monitored at the millisecond level, every sliver of a speed advantage gained counts. And, to get that edge, financial firms will go to almost any lengths, including building high powered particle accelerators in their basements. Well, at least that's what we imagine. Banks and high-frequency trading companies are looking to the neutrino as a potential communications tool.

Bentley aims to sell 3K SUVs annually... including plug-in hybrid version

If you want a top-of-the-line SUV with serious performance capabilities, look no further than the Volkswagen Group. Its Porsche unit has had tremendous success with the Cayenne, a vehicle that has doubled its sales all on its own – and that's not even accounting for the Volkswagen Touareg or Audi Q7 that share some of its underpinnings. Keen to capitalize on that success, the German auto giant is overseeing the application of the same formula to two of its other divisions: Lamborghini, which just unveiled its new Urus concept, and Bentley, which is working on an SUV of its own.

Four days before the purported launch of Samsung's cloud service, Korea's other technology giant has unveiled LG Cloud. The eponymous service offers 5GB free space as standard, while owners of LG's Smart TVs or smartphones will get 50GB free for six months. It'll push content between your devices, appropriately compressed for the medium, so high definition images on your TV will be slimmed down to save your phone's data cap.

The company has recently announced the launch of its own cloud-based storage service dubbed LG Cloud and is expected to see a beta launch in both Korea and the US. The good news is that if you own an LG handset, you will be eligible for free 50GB worth of storage when you install the app on your phone. Unfortunately this offer will only last for the first six months, after which storage for LG owners will drop to 5GB while non-LG owners will only receive 2GB.

Microsoft invests $300 million in new Barnes & Noble 'strategic partnership'

Well, that's an interesting end to all those legal tussles. Microsoft and bookseller Barnes and Noble have decided to buddy-up in the face of competitors like Amazon and Apple. The strategic partnership - Microsoft loves 'em - would come in the form of a new Barnes and Noble subsidiary that deals with all things Nook, in addition to its education business. The bookseller would hold onto the lion's share at 82.4 percent, with the remaining 17.6 percent in Microsoft's control. The first benefit posited would be a Nook app for the incoming Windows 8.

Woz: Windows Phone is ‘beautiful,' Android ‘no contest,' still loves iPhone

When Steve Wozniak talks mobile, people love to listen. Last time we checked in, he was lauding some of Android's finer points, and now he's raining praise on Windows Phone. In an interview with A New Domain, the Apple co-founder was all too happy to share his recent positive experiences with the Espoo / Redmond collaboration. In particular, Woz waxes about how intuitive the interface is, and how naturally apps lead you around. He goes on to say how there's nothing he's seen that isn't more beautiful (than iOS and Android) on the Windows system, before claiming Android is “no contest” when it comes to the interface.

UK judge finds mom culpable for child's injuries because of incorrect child seat

Any time a parent's poor judgment results in harm or injury to a child, it's a sad case. This story, however, seems particularly tragic. According to The Telegraph, a British woman whose daughter was seriously injured in a car crash was found negligent and partially responsible for her daughter's injuries because the girl was riding in an inappropriate child safety seat. While the accident was judged to be entirely the fault of the other driver, according to the report, his insurance company insisted that part of the responsibility for the girl's injuries fell on her mother.

New Yorkers want parking ban to curb... sex in cars?

New Yorkers want parking ban to curb... sex in cars?

To some residents of Midtown Manhattan, sex is a problem. Specifically, sex in cars is a problem and they've asked the Community Board to ban weekend parking on their streets. The board granted the request, citing chronic drug use, double parking and rampant sex. Unfortunately, the board has no power to enforce the ban and is awaiting a review by the Department of Transportation. If passed, the NYPD will presumably get involved and start asking frisky fornicators to get a room.

Half the problem could take care of itself soon.

A joint venture of Canadian carriers Rogers, Bell and Telus called EnStream is in final talks with the country's leading banks (likely CIBC, TD, RBC, Scotiabank and BMO) to bring a mobile wallet solution to the Great White North within six months. The system, which was demoed at the CWTA Wireless Showcase last September, enables mobile payments by storing a user's financial credentials on the SIM located inside their NFC-capable phone. It aims to replace credit and debit cards at first - perhaps even driver's licenses and loyalty programs down the road. Carriers plan to charge banks a flat rate instead of a per-transaction fee.

Blogger wins against Apple to cover Nvidia GPU failures

Blogger Seattle Rex did not take no for an answer and instead took Apple to small claims court when the company denied fulfilling its promise to cover the cost of repair of a notebook that was part of a GPU replacement program that covered several defective Nvidia GPUs – in this case, Nvidia's 8600M GT chip. Apple's reasoning why it would not pay for Seattle Rex' unbootable MacBook Pro was that since it was unbootable, no one would know what the reason for this circumstance really was, even if it was common sense to conclude that the GPU was at fault.

2012 KIA Rio EX 5-door Test Drive

2012 KIA Rio EX 5-door Test Drive

For the past 2 weeks I've been lucky enough to test drive a new car. The first car was a 2012 Mazda Mazda 3 and this past week it was a KIA Rio EX 5-Door. I loved the KIA Optima I test drove last year, so I was excited to try the smaller, more economical Rio. Note: Click the images in this review to see a larger view.

I want to start this “review” out like I've done the other 2 test drive articles, by letting you know that this isn't going to be a super detailed vehicle review like you'd read in a car magazine or see on a car show. I don't know much about engines and don't car.
