Carmack: Doom 3's engine ready for open-sourcing, awaiting 'OK' from legal

Carmack: Doom 3's engine ready for open-sourcing, awaiting 'OK' from legal

When the granddaddy of FPS tweets, we listen. For those unaware, that's John Carmack - you know, the guy behind games like Doom, Quake and Rage - confirming that Doom 3's engine, id Tech 4, is all bundled up for its open-source release, only awaiting clearance from legal. To be verbose, that doesn't mean you'll be getting down with a gratis copy of Doom, but rather with the powerhouse that powers it, a veritable boon to game developers and tinkerers, alike. The release is par for the course for the company, as id Software's been routinely open-sourcing its older engines for as long as we can remember.

Motorola XOOM 2 tablet pricing and image leak

Motorola XOOM 2 tablet pricing and image leak

. We first heard mumblings of the XOOM 2, Motorola's second Android Honeycomb tablet, in late September. Now, a leaked advertisement obtained by Engadget suggests the XOOM 2 will be offered for €399.99 by Carphone Warehouse in Ireland just time for the holiday shopping season. The XOOM 2 is reportedly equipped with a 10.1-inch display, a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, a camera capable of recording 1080p video and 1GB of RAM. It is also said to be 9-millimeters thick, which is just a hair fatter than the 8.6-millimeter thick Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Samsung Illusion, Casio G'zOne Ravine 2 and BlackBerry Curve 9370 to hit Verizon this month?

Samsung Illusion, Casio G'zOne Ravine 2 and BlackBerry Curve 9370 to hit Verizon this month?

Don't rub your eyes. That above pic is no mirage. It's a leaked rebate form heralding the Big Red arrival of an actual Illusion - a 3G Samsung-made one, that is. The form, sent to us by an eagle-eyed tipster, confirms that mysterious Gingerbread phone's imminent November launch, while also outing two other equally un-hyped devices: the BlackBerry Curve 9370 and Casio G'zOne Ravine 2. No official release date could be gleaned from the info at hand, but with a redemption period ranging from the 1st of this month to the 28th, we're fairly certain this triumvirate of mid-range phones will be making a retail debut soon.

Duke Nukem 3D on Android

Duke Nukem 3D on Android

Duke Nukem 3D has arrived on Android and although there is some excitement going on, the first impressions are also (very) mixed. If you don't know Duke Nukem, it was a classic game in the 90s and was in fact Doom's nemesis. The action happens in Los Angeles, which is under attack by aliens and Duke is going to use a vast arsenal of weapons to fight back. Duke Nukem fans can relive the good old days for $1, but I'll pass. The game has aged significantly, and I don't think that the controls are adapted to the touch screen format, especially on the tiny space allowed by smartphones.

Motorola RAZR gets delayed in the UK

Motorola RAZR gets delayed in the UK

Just as we finally found out when its Droid-branded twin would be launched by Verizon in the US, the Motorola RAZR is facing a delay in the UK. The new, reborn RAZR was supposed to go on sale over there today, according to what we heard in the past. However, that didn't happen. Furthermore, Clove, a well known online retailer of mobile phones, has announced that the RAZR's launch in the UK has been delayed by Motorola. Fortunately though, this isn't a big delay we're talking about. According to the retailer, the superphone should be released sometime during next week.
